The bond between a handler and a dog | UBUNTU - A Cape Town Story

I’ve worked with police dogs before.

In the UK. In another uniform. In another life.

What struck me in Cape Town wasn’t how different they were.

It was how similar.

Behind every police dog is years of patience, repetition and trust. The animal doesn’t understand politics, crime statistics or newspaper headlines. It understands one person. It’s handler.

Watching them together, you realise the lead isn’t what holds them close.

Trust is.

That trust has to be earned every single day.

It made me wonder whether the same is true for communities. For policing. For countries.

Perhaps the strongest partnerships aren’t built through authority at all.

Perhaps they’re built because someone shows up consistently until trust exists.

That was one of the quiet moments Sam and I found while filming Ubuntu.

Not chasing action.

Just watching a handler and his dog, and seeing a relationship that had taken years to build.

UBUNTU – A Cape Town Story.

Coming very soon.

About: The documentary was made through @noexcusefilms — our UK production company.

A small team. No big crew getting in the way of the conversation. No agenda we were trying to smuggle in.

Three things we promised ourselves before we boarded the plane, and held to from the first day of filming to the last:

– No sensationalism.

– No shortcuts.

– No excuses.

That’s the company. That’s how we work. And that, more than anything, is why people who don’t normally talk to cameras sat down and talked to ours.

Waitlist in bio.
